Operations and Maintenance Department - Street Division Operations

Thank you for your interest in the City of Mason City Street Division.

The City’s Street Division is responsible for managing the maintenance and repair of City streets daily in all types of weather conditions, replacement and repair of traffic signs, storm sewers and the planting, trimming and removal of trees.

Snow Removal:

The Street Department sends out sanders whenever the streets become covered with snow or freezing rain creating ice and slippery situations. When 2 – 3 inches of snow has fallen, the Street Department sends out the remaining snow removal equipment which includes snow plows, road graders, front end loaders, plow pickups and park tractors. The Street and Park Departments then continue to plow and remove snow until all the streets, alleys, parking lots and trails are free of snow. Salt and sand are continued to be spread to help with slippery conditions.

City crews do not remove snow from sidewalks and driveways. It is the responsibility of the property owner/occupant to remove snow from sidewalks and driveway approaches.

When there is an abundance of snow accumulated along the streets, snow is hauled from the downtown streets and parking lots.

Street Sweeping:

Street sweepers are operated when the weather permits. The sweepers follow a route working their way throughout the neighborhoods throughout the entire city. It usually takes approximately 1 month to sweep the entire City.

Tree Trimming / Removal:

The tree crew trims and removes trees on a per request basis working on the worst and most hazardous trees first and continuing to the least dangerous. When requests are completed, the tree crew moves to a neighborhood to do regular trimming.

Sign Maintenance:

Traffic signage is replaced and repaired per the direction of the City Engineering Office. To have a sign repaired or replaced contact Engineering at 641-421-3605.

Street Repairs:

A spray patching machine mixes hot CRS-2 emulsion with aggregate to fill potholes throughout the city. The highly traveled streets are completed first, then the residential streets and the paved alleys. To request a pothole repair call (641) 421-3675.

During the cold winter months the Street Department fills potholes with a cold asphalt mix to eliminate the hole until a more permanent repair can be made.

Gravel streets and alleys are graded 2 to 3 times per year. To request gravel street maintenance call (641) 421-3675.

Storm Sewer:

The Street Department repairs and maintains storm sewers that are collapsed or plugged and do not take storm runoff as needed. To request storm sewer maintenance call 641-421-3675.

Mowing:

The street right-of-way and ditches on the main routes are mowed by the Street Department.
