Deputy Chief of Training

ADC Randy Elsbernd

Assistant Deputy Chief Randy Elsbernd has been with the Mason City Fire Department since 2004. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2018 and then to Assistant Deputy Chief-Training in 2020. Before coming to the Mason City Fire Department, Randy was a paramedic at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, IA and volunteered with South Winneshiek 1st Responders and Calmar Fire Department. 

Chief Elsbernd has earned an Associate’s of Applied Science Degree in Fire Science at Columbia Southern University. State certifications include Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Fire Instructor I, Fire Instructor II, Fire Officer I, Fire Officer II, Fire Inspector I, Driver/Operator/Pumper, and Hazmat Tech. 

As Assistant Deputy Chief-Training, Chief Elsbernd is responsible for fire and EMS training at the department along with performing fire inspections and assisting with fire investigations. Chief Elsbernd, his wife Becky and three children enjoy living on an acreage. Hobbies include bee keeping, gardening, biking, and John Deere tractors.
