Fire Marshal

Medlin No Title

Deputy Chief-Fire Marshal, Jamey Medlin has been with the Mason City Fire Department since 1999.  Jamey started his fire service in 1995 as a volunteer with the Rudd Fire Department, then a career firefighter/EMT with the Charles City Fire Department. Fire Marshal Jamey Medlin leads the Mason City Department’s Bureau of Fire Prevention. His duties include reviewing new and existing building plans for compliance with all locally adopted codes including city, state, and federal codes, fire code enforcement through fire inspections of existing occupancies, fire cause investigation, and fire prevention education. He is supported by our Assistant Deputy Chief of Training and other firefighters in the Fire Prevention Bureau. The Fire Prevention Bureau can be reached by calling the fire department Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm at 641-421-3640 or by e-mail at [email protected]

The Fire Prevention Bureau is a vital part of the fire department’s efforts to reduce the incidence and severity of fires in the community through fire inspections and code enforcement. The Fire Prevention Bureau preforms fire inspections on buildings on a rotation so all buildings are inspected regularly. Special permits or occupancies may require annually inspections. Fire code violations are documented and mitigation of violations is required. Historically, the common fire code violations include improper electrical wiring, improper storage of flammable and combustible liquids, exit signs and emergency lights not in working order, and multiple locking mechanizes on means of egress doors. The Fire Prevention Bureau works closely with property owners in the city to assist them in complying with all applicable fire codes.

Anyone interested in purchasing a building for commercial purpose, excluding single family residents within the city of Mason City limits is encouraged to contact the Fire Prevention Bureau at 641-421-3640 prior to making any purchase commitments. The Fire Marshal is able to inform tenants, owners, and potential property owners of fire code requirements and upgrades which may be required to use the property as they intend.
